As she stood, with arms out stretched, she realized that there was no longer anyone to catch her if she did in fact fall. If her foot slipped in even the smallest way on the mossy rocks, with the ocean's salt and green tongue licking the pointed sides, not even the water's cradling voice would catch her and carry her back to the warm beaches and sandy toes tucked inside sun bleached sneakers. This was becoming more and more comforting to her, this self sufficiency that she saw was lacking in her peers. She could do this on her own, and she would.
